Pros

I enjoyed most of my time at Xcalar, in fact up until very near the end I loved my job. The employees, while a little reserved at first, was very friendly. Lively conversation over lunch, beers sampling at happy hour Friday and excitedly watching the World Cup are all fond memories I hold from Xcalar. The work, while challenging, was engaging, and being a small company there was very little red tape to slow down the process. Compensation was pretty good, competitive salary, company provided lunch and dinner, healthcare, though there is no 401k matching.

Cons

Xcalar is a very intense company. I recall management telling me on multiple occasions that the company does not believe in work/life balance. While that sentiment is stressful, it did help me improve at my job, that improvement would never be enough though. I believe Xcalar is only a comfortable environment for a very small subset of personality types, this is supported by extremely high turnover, and my personal experience. The management tries to push you, to be better, to do more, and I think they expect some pushback. Meetings would turn into yelling matches and that was somehow seen as normal. I don’t handle confrontation well, so I just felt like I was getting pushed around at work everyday. This was very harmful to me, I started having panic attacks after meetings. I would spend half an hour listening to music in the stairwell then I would be able work again, but one day it became too much and I had to leave the office. I came back late that night and finished my work. The next day my manager wanted to talk to me about how I left, but rather than any sort of empathy or an attempt to improve communication I was told that if I can’t handle the stress of the job I should quit. So I did.

Thank you for your feedback. Startups are a unique experience and can be stressful, but we have broken new ground with tremendous progress. We have learned so much, and the work is exciting as well as steady, our employee's safety, and work-life balance are essential to us.

Pros

Unlimited freedom to push the boundaries. You are not faulted for your failures. Rather, you are encouraged to analyze and learn from your mistakes and become non-linearly better. You will work with the very best in industry whether it has to do technology or field or operations. People are kind and and will do whatever to help you. Your team has your back. Management is chiseled off a different stone. It is an environment that sets you up for greatness. Grit and determination can compete with sheer intellect to succeed at Xcalar -- you can have either and do very well; having both, a rarity, will be truly recognized.

Cons

This company is not for all. It's like joining the Special Forces. The pace, discipline and focus on the highest quality can be punishing. If you think that joining a great startup will take you some place better than where you are then this is not the right company for you. At Xcalar no one tells you when to come or when to go., but the culture of work is addictive. You end up pushing yourself to the limit and making sacrifices elsewhere. The company manages it resources very carefully. Think stock not cash.
