Pros
Management styles vary, but in research mostly you are left to own devices; trusted with a lot, thrown in the deep end; opportunities to meet clients and travel (pre-pandemic) although this varies by team; not hugely corporate and quite laid back working style; good benefits and flexible working make up for lower salaries (healthcare, paid leave etc); clear career path if you know what you want (skewed towards Upstream)
Cons
Can get easily stuck in a silo and quite difficult to move sideways; constant restructuring; uncompetitive salary; some managers are a relic from a different time and are less flexible (but this is true of any company of a certain size); not very diverse
