Pros

In previous years one of the big Pro was your work colleagues but now hours have been slashed to 1 in the morning 1 at night so you don't know your colleagues which is a problem

Cons

Wages used to be fantastic compared to a lot of other retail but now its just competitive. Don't dream of calling in sick, regionals and the apparent supporting cast do not care, cover will not be found Being short staffed constantly (so many vacancies they now advertise for entire areas instead of store by store) means you will be expected to work significantly above your contract and holiday requests are a nightmare due to staffing issues so most staff in recent years never get close to using the full entitlment (But does that mean they will pay you for the time lost because it wasnt your fault? NO. well will they atleast let you carry over the balance to the following year? You can carry forward 1 week but everything else is lost despite it being statutory holiday leave. Benefits are non existent, you get a store discount that is so low its still better to go to the likes of tesco sainsbury's or asda You are literally just a number long term staff 25+ years got no recognition so do not expect any, Just come in punch the clock and leave. Solo working (and you will be solo working there is no way around that with the budgets being given regardless of age, gender or experience) in an environment that can be dangerous with limited security measures taken especially at night, staff are told to put the door lock on which just means you are possibly locking yourself in a shop with a violent individual and in the case of an incident are not gonna be able to get anyone to help as now the help is locked out while you try to fend of an attacker.

Pros

Flexible hours (depending on manager). Easy enough money.

Cons

Company has no concern for staff welfare. Most shifts will be single-manned, contrary to both common sense and the advice of the PSNI. The days can be slow due to lack of anything engaging for staff. No radio/music allowed in the store, and no genuine rest breaks seem to be permitted when single-manned. The impact that constant lone working has on individuals is not considered. Barring the panic button, very little is offered to make the workplace safe for lone workers, especially those in shops who keep their door locked. In the event of a medical emergency or accident, employees are at serious risk. Customers can sometimes be difficult, however that is admittedly out of the company's control.
