Pros

Double pay on bank holidays. Easy enough job once you learn everything.

Cons

They will split up your hours as much as possible, you could be in 5 days despite having a low contract. Never any overtime because head office are greedy. A while back they were refusing to pay people their statutory holiday pay if they did any overtime! Open all year round and young staff are expected to work Boxing Day, Christmas Eve til late and all other major holidays while managers never do anything! You will be expected to open and close alone as well as having duties including working with the safe alone which you don’t get paid any extra for just minimum wage. Head office are greedy, horrible people and overall they treat their staff like dirt. Managers aren’t any better either they will pick the best hours for themselves and younger staff will be put down to work every Sunday etc. Wouldn’t recommend working here as head office and managers are a joke.

Pros

Flexible hours (depending on manager). Easy enough money.

Cons

Company has no concern for staff welfare. Most shifts will be single-manned, contrary to both common sense and the advice of the PSNI. The days can be slow due to lack of anything engaging for staff. No radio/music allowed in the store, and no genuine rest breaks seem to be permitted when single-manned. The impact that constant lone working has on individuals is not considered. Barring the panic button, very little is offered to make the workplace safe for lone workers, especially those in shops who keep their door locked. In the event of a medical emergency or accident, employees are at serious risk. Customers can sometimes be difficult, however that is admittedly out of the company's control.
