Pros

The culture at Wholegrain Digital is excellent and I made friends for life during my time there. The company workers are all aligned in a core mission to "green the web" and educate others to do the same. I learned a ton and had some amazing opportunities including working abroad in Antwerp and working on some of the biggest and most important websites in the UK. The benefits are generous and salary was good too. Most importantly, there is an honest and open culture which meant that when the going gets tough or you just need a time out, you had the confidence that others would support you and be there for you no matter if it was a personal or professional problem. Particularly appreciated the company's investment in mental well being through using Spill - a Slack plugin offering free counselling.

Cons

During my time, the company experienced rapid change with the addition of a new SLT and Managing Director. This brought new energy and perspectives into the team which was a positive, but meant that new processes were introduced and things were always changing. This was sometimes difficult while managing new projects. As a Project Manager, I sometimes felt like I had to be "always on" for the clients during standard work hours in a way that other job roles didn't have to. This meant that while the flexible working benefit was available it was slightly difficult to utilise well when in a client facing role. Competing priorities and workload could be very stressful at times, but there are always options to discuss the situation with the team.

Pros

When you read most companies vision page, it's a generic jumble of buzzwords that don't impact on anything except the CEOs end of year letter. Wholegrain on the other hand lives up to their mission everyday, and they've set an ambitious goal to be profitable and force for positive cultural and societal change. They treat staff like adults, they allow you to make decisions to shape your own role and have no hard line musts other than to be present and give it your all. Having a high trust remote working ethos was also a fantastic part of the role, being granted the autonomy to make a schedule work as you saw fit and always encouraging productivity to your own body clock, not beholden to archaic 9-5 practises.

Cons

Wholegrain had no obvious downsides as an employer, any dissatisfaction could be voiced and a change would be implemented to resolve it.
