Unrealistic, unfortunate - Manager Membership Services WHOOP Employee Review

Pros

The people I work directly with are all good people. My direct manager is great. The product has the potential to be excellent once issues and bugs are flushed out, and is still pretty cool even when non-yet-perfect. Insurance is excellent. PTO is okay, however, it differs in this department from the rest of the company which could be improved.

Cons

The workload is enormous. If you are unwilling to work more than 40 hours per week you cannot be successful here. Emails, slack, and other systems are blowing up with notifications one after the other with no downtime for head-down work. 40 hours per week has you quickly falling behind. Leadership asks for feedback and then gaslights when feedback is not all 100% positive. Leadership (that which is continuously changing) is constantly rolling out new initiatives and “roadmaps”, only adding more work without resolving any of the currently open tasks at hand. Nothing has been offloaded, only added. Managers have no stake in anything, making “talking to your manager” about viable concerns virtually pointless. Likewise, being a manager unable to prompt change after feedback is given by reports is disappointing and also feels pointless.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review about your experience at WHOOP. We're happy to hear that you have a good relationship with your Manager. It's also great to hear that you believe in the power of our product. We're sorry to hear that you are struggling with the workload and work/life balance. Please know that we welcome and encourage folks to unplug at night and on the weekends by muting Slack and avoiding checking emails unless absolutely necessary. We also encourage employees to take control over their schedule and block "Focus Time" so we all have dedicated time to be "heads down" on projects that require dedicated and uninterrupted desk time. A great deck outlining Communications Best Practices & Productivity "Hacks" has been circulated that we recommend you review when you have a moment. In 2023, we're looking forward to more focus and strict adherence to achieving our overarching goals and OKRs. It sounds like you may have feedback about how longer-term initiatives are communicated, and we would certainly welcome the opportunity to speak to you about that. Feel free to reach out to us at hr@whoop.com so we can schedule a time to chat further.

Pros

The CEO appears to have a clear and compelling long term vision. The product has strong brand loyalty and a passionate user base.

Cons

Internal politics and misaligned priorities can slow progress and decision making. Some decisions do not appear to be grounded purely in what is best for the user or product. Development cycles can feel long, sometimes taking 2 to 3 years for meaningful product evolution. Several larger departments appear to lack a well balanced mix of experienced, merit driven, and deeply knowledgeable contributors, which can lead to disconnects between teams and ultimately show up in the product. Egos and internal agendas at times overshadow collaboration and product focused thinking.
