Pros

You could form good friendships with others because you both share a common misery.

Cons

HR is rarely at work and is family, this person makes the decisions, decisions based off favoritism. Doesn't know what person works in what department half the time. Yearly bonuses are not 10% of your pay here, could range between $100-$800 and the higher spectrum will get that instead of the raises they deserve. This process is also based on favoritism. When the base pay is raised for incoming employees, the wage of current employees will remain at the lower rate. Forget about vacation days. Over time is not daily, it is whatever extra time you have at the end of the pay period. Most project managers are inexperienced and blame their mistakes on other departments. No announcement/interview opportunity for new project managing openings. Confidentiality does not exist here and there are no consequences for people who indulge in inappropriate behavior with other employees. This company is really cheap when it comes to broken equipment. Hiring/recruitment process is not efficient and they will wait until you are mentally/physically drained with your work to take hiring someone more seriously. The only way you are happy here is if you are that one lucky person who happened to be the favorite and got moved up. If your problems do not effect upper management and their comfortability, they will not get solved.

While it is true we do not have a big HR Department, this is to maintain a lean organization and use our resources wisely—specifically investing in high-end analytical equipment. However, the HR manager can be reached anytime either in person, or by email and cell phone when not at the office, and is able to act upon any concerns immediately. No company decision is based on favoritism: career advances, pay raises, bonuses, and gifts are strictly based on individual performance on the job. The company offers vacation time and holidays, the same as any other company in the industry. Sick leave and overtime are provided as per current labor laws and all is stated in the employee handbook that is readily available to employees. It is inaccurate to say that the project managers are inexperienced, the six project managers have an average employment time of nearly 9 years. The company has on open door policy, which is explained to all new employees when hired and also during the ethics training sessions. This means employees can come to upper management with any complains or issues without any fear of reprisals or negative actions; confidentiality is always assured. In the same vein, inappropriate behaviors are not tolerated, especially when they compromise analytical data. The company invests heavily in analytical equipment, having only state-of-the-art instrumentation which is constantly being updated. Over the last three fiscal years, the investments in instrumentation were approximately half a million dollars per year and will continue as new instrumentation with more capabilities come to the market. Most associates enjoyed employment at Weck Labs and no decision is based on favoritism, just on performance at the job.
