Pros
Well, the atmosphere was fairly relaxed and the amount of hours given was appropriate. The amount of experience I was given in customer service proved to be valuable in my other jobs and the health benefits were very nice but probably unnecessary for a high school student. Paychecks were readily available on Friday, every week.
Cons
Where or where to begin... Firstly, training is a joke, it involves you sitting in a room staring at a computer screen for literally 8-10 hours (In 2 shifts) learning how to clean up messes with brooms and the proper way of greeting someone, the whole experience was very, fake. Keep in mind, when you're a courtesy clerk you are on the bottom, the absolute bottom, you are below the garbage man outside, you are given no respect by anyone and your achievements beyond the call of your job description are treated as mere flukes. You have one benefit of working at a Vons, you get a special card, where if you spend around $500 you get a gift card, for $25, at Safeway, and soda is $0.54, not $1.05, besides that, you get no special deals. Union is mandatory, you have to join or you won't be able to work, and yes they will take $100 from your first couple paychecks. I also find it funny that I was "let go" in very very obscure ways, both of which happened 6 months after I was employed, as in I got fired when I was supposed to get my health benefits.
