Pros

The funny thing about the "pros" which I experienced at Viasat is that not one of them came from Viasat's leadership enabling an environment conducive to the success of its own employees. Viasat has a mostly flexible environment. It varies from team-to-team because there is no structure/standard at Viasat (at all). I enjoyed essentially making my own schedule, with the exception of mandatory virtual meetings. I made great relationships with the people in Viasat's Engineering teams. There were* a great deal of intelligent Engineers and Engineering leaders who were focused on doing the work without paying mind to the political corporate BS I had to deal with on the Talent Acquisition/People & Culture teams.

Cons

Where do I begin? - Total compensation is below market. - My manager would regularly gossip about other people in the company and make them the object of ridicule in my meetings with my Talent Acquisition team. - The Recruiter who guided me through the hiring process flat-out lied to me on several occasions, and this person is a manager who is widely regarded and respected as a leader for Talent Acquisition. She told me that I should expect stock rewards and cash bonuses annually. That doesn't even exist in TA. Nobody receives an annual bonus, which leads me to my next point. - Viasat only values its Engineers. That's great for the Engineers and truthfully I connected best with those people during my time there. Unfortunately, the rest of the company is disregarded. - The HR and Talent Acquisition departments are wrought with soulless, disingenuous, talentless politicians who are greatly threatened by anyone who comes in to challenge the norm. Which is ironic, because Viasat and its Talent Acquisition talking heads will *relentlessly* preach the company's "core values," which include CHALLENGING THE NORM. I was regularly criticized by my manager and his boss for bringing honest ideas to the table in a respectful way. - I would frequently be forced to sit in mandatory meetings with no agenda where we accomplished nothing. These mandatory meetings were taken as an opportunity for "leadership" to grandstand and posture. They would regularly talk to us like children and provide us with no value whatsoever. - TA and HR teams regularly talk disrespectfully and toxically about the rest of the company. Not just other teams, but specific people. I couldn't have a single meeting with my manager without him absolutely trashing people on our hiring teams. It was so toxic. - The company likes to use the word "ambiguity" as a scapegoat for their lack of organization and attention to detail. Everything is a giant mess at Viasat. - Training doesn't exist. The "training" I was given at Viasat was nothing more than "sit in several meetings consisting of several hours each, while we play a video for you to watch." And the video would regularly be some marketing/sales mumbo jumbo garbage. - Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion measures in hiring are non-existent. I worked in Talent Acquisition for over two years and not once did a single leader in TA go over a plan with me for DEI. They have adopted a tool called "Textio" which every single TA leader speaks poorly of (because it's useless) and nobody uses as a standard, anyway. It's a joke. - Viasat loves to preach how encouraging they are for internal career opportunities for all! Except that isn't true in practice, at all. Every single time I facilitated an internal transfer for someone else, it was a major battle between the current manager and the new manager's teams. Oh yeah, and when I personally had an internal transfer opportunity, my Talent Acquisition leaders and HR Business partner colluded to deny me even the opportunity to interview for the position. And then my manager lied to me about the entire process, and HR confirmed that he lied to me. Then I was laid off. Hmm, what a surprise. Don't waste your time with this JOKE of a company. They don't know their a-- from their elbow and are driving it straight into the ground. After acquiring Inmarsat, they created tons of redundancies in the company and aid off 20%+ of their workforce in 2023. Oh, and their significantly delayed launch of their third satellite ended in a catastrophic failure. They're doomed and they do not care about their employees one bit.

Thank you for the review. We’re sorry to hear you had this experience while working at Viasat. We’ve escalated this internally and will work on solutions to create a better experience for our employees. Over the past several months, our leadership team has worked to mitigate the impact of various shifts in our business. There’s a limit to what can be shared broadly in situations like this, and we understand the unfortunate frustration that this can create. That said, we truly value your feedback and are committed to being as transparent as possible to help our employees understand the rationale behind difficult decisions and all the tradeoffs considered. We wish you the best of luck in your future career!
