Pros

Opportunity to learn about the reforestation and carbon market measurement, verification and reporting - growing skills in climate data

Cons

Unfortunately had a poor experience working with co-founder with one of the most unkind, rude and passive aggressive behaviours I’ve encountered in a workplace environment. Sadly as this is a startup, HR is merely a risk manager for the company’s reputation. I’ve witnessed numerous incidents where a cofounder said flipping the table, getting an ego bruised only to introduce a “bro-proved” emoji the following day on slack, and called a team member out just because an informal meet and learn meeting that was conducted without him has greatly “bothered him”. BroTopia male ego run rampant here at times, with a few senior members trying to patch holes in a sinking ship of a toxic culture. It’s true that a few members have been given the boot because they were blamed for the failures of an overloaded development team who are expected to build within a chaotic and disorganized paper napkin sketched solutions with a lack of discovery and user research. Nepotism & tendency to throw money at making hiring decisions of consultants without caring about team members concerns & professional development leads to burnout and heightened anxiety about restructuring. Diversity and inclusion is also lacking in that only one member of the leadership team is a woman, with HR also complicit in using employees invisible disability against them.

Pros

- Travel and experiences - Seamless expense system

Cons

Job security is the real risk here. I left a stable, well-paying job at a gold mine to join, and was let go after one month with no reason given beyond "not a good fit." If you're leaving secure employment for this, weigh that heavily. The mission also didn't match what I expected once I was inside. In my experience the model functions largely as matchmaking, connecting businesses to tree-planting operations that were already happening, rather than generating new projects the way the marketing implies. I also learned production of their clothing had been moved back to China, which sat oddly with the brand's positioning. When they started they seemed proud to base their clothing production in Oregon, but I guess the profit was more important. I came in wanting work I believed in and left disillusioned with both the mission and how the exit was handled. I wouldn't recommend working here if you care about ethical business practices, environmental restoration, or having a stable job.
