Pros

Global company that operates like a small/medium sized business. This is great for those who are self starters, accountable, and don't require micromanagement. The only limit to someone's growth are themselves as there are opportunities at every level. Employees can move up very quickly compared to other businesses where it takes many years to move up. The employees are wonderful, friendly, and simply awesome. There is not much in the way of drama and/or politics. It's one of the best aspects of working at VectorBuilder. Work life balance is better than average, mainly due to the lack of micromanagement. Both remote and onsite roles are available. Employee benefits are good which are fully company paid unless adding dependents. Company is stable and has a great future.

Cons

This company is not a good choice for those who prefer working for highly structured mega corporations or those typically needing to be managed heavily or even micromanaged. This is not a company where you can be an invisible cog in a giant wheel. Everyone actively contributes to the success of the company which is how opportunities become available for those that do well. Pay overall is a little below average for the biotech industry however this comes with the tradeoff that less experience is required to be hired into the company and it is rare to be working any type of overtime. The lower pay in all reality also comes with lower expectations when compared to similar companies roles. In sales, other companies may pay a bit more but they require previous sales experience and aim to burn you after a couple years by forcing overtime work regularly and traveling often. Management team is on the small side and obviously spread thin. This can be good or bad depending on how much you prefer being actively managed as everyone is expected to simply do their jobs with minimal supervision. Most of the employees at the company, even at the upper management level, have never worked anywhere else really and came straight from academia. This is common in this industry and it is no different at VectorBuilder. Although it has improved overtime, communication and general knowledge of common business practices is still lacking in many respects.

Unrealistic commission targets are frequently changed at management’s discretion. The company often hires employees without prior sales experience and entices them with commission structures that are, in practice, extremely difficult or impossible to achieve. When entire teams consistently fail to earn commission, the issue is framed as individual underperformance rather than a flaw in the targets themselves. Targets often appear disconnected from historical performance data. This creates a predatory dynamic, especially for employees in their first sales role, who may not yet recognize how unrealistic the structure is or how often expectations shift. Although the company often hires highly educated employees, compensation does not reflect their level of expertise. Do not recruit people you cannot pay competitively, and do not take advantage of individuals who are new to sales. If you are considering a sales role here, familiarize yourself with your state’s wage and commission laws and keep thorough documentation. Do not allow yourself to be pressured or bullied into accepting unclear or shifting compensation terms.
