Pros

Relatively simple work Good experience if you are new

Cons

You are required to own thousands of dollars in equipment in order to be considered for the job. The pay is incredibly low for the service that you are providing. You must sign a contract. Inside that contract is a one year non-compete clause. This was perhaps okay when they covered a lot of games. Now it is like shooting yourself in the foot to sign that non-compete because you can make maybe $1,000 in a season. Gross. Varsity Views does not reimburse you when an event is cancelled. Events are cancelled frequently due to weather or schools having scheduling conflicts. The company has greatly reduced the number of events that it covers. During the 2016-2017 seasons, I have found myself frequently driving to games that I am supposed to cover and the schedule Varsity Views has been incorrect because they do no follow up with schools after they post the schedules. I have had a number of experiences where schools have asked me to leave events because they disagree with the company's business practices. This is humiliating and a huge waste of time. Varsity Views does not give any of the money back to schools that they cover. They will cover the cost of admissions. I have received complaints from people that we come into the schools to take photos of teenagers to sell back to them. The best argument I have heard against that was at a girl's soccer game, arguing that we are exploiting and selling images of young women's bodies without given consent. Similar to many newer startup companies, they pay you on a 1099. You are your own book keeper. It seems to be one of many things that Varsity Views has tried to skimp out on paying people to do.

Pros

Plenty of work, easy scheduling system

Cons

President is a buffoon -- inexperienced, no knowledge of industry, kid with an MBA who could write a biz plan and sell his concept but no idea how to best use VC money, no idea how to run a business, no professionalism. Employees seem to run the show and they have even less experience and professionalism than he does. Pay rate is way, way, way too low for professional photography. No cancellation policy in place, and with high school games often cancelled for various reasons, this is crucial because photographers lose income if they are not compensated for time lost when a client commits to a block of time but cancels (or client event cancels and there is no shoot). Company completely screwed up IRS practices in 2015 and tried to get us to accept filing 2015 wages late and/or in 2016's returns. Nobody at company except a few contract photographers knows anything about photography. Print/download pricing to retail customers and also to media outlet customers is way too low and takes the bottom out of the market for real photographers. They are destroying the market.
