Pros

At this point I really can't even list any pros except perhaps that they're so desperate for workers you could get hired on while lying through your teeth about experience.

Cons

They can barely afford to pay their employees and insist on handing out paper checks that they refuse to let you cash at their bank. During onboarding I was told payday was Friday, and by my third week I was told to not deposit my check until Monday. I barely had a chance to get onboard before a paycheck bounced, and after that I simply couldn't trust payroll. On top of that, the software development department has been a revolving door for years. The company is highly disorganized and what little documentation exists is hidden somewhere in a maze of barely-labelled filing cabinets. Management is woefully ignorant of the actual process of software development, to the extent that I have wasted hours explaining basic level software concepts, defending my work, and being forced to justify all of my predecessors' time and effort on my project instead of being productive. Management fluctuates between overbearing and completely hands-off. They are inconsistent in setting objectives and will give unrelated, unnecessary, or even conflicting instructions. I was given free reign to develop for my project with no clear deadline for demo presentations until after several weeks, when I was suddenly told to have something to present by the next day.

Pros

No prior knowledge was required. They accept anyone willing to work.

Cons

The project is old and lacks any sense of direction. Documentation is scarce and you'd have to start the project from scratch if you're trying to develop something of quality. I never earned the manager's trust even though he knows nothing about software development. I had to defend every decision I made. After a couple of months of development, my manager told me to delete my solution and start over completely because he didn't understand it. Everyone that finds anything better leaves because the owner does nothing but cause problems. You will be yelled at. The owner is very old school and will remind you constantly that he's in charge. Also, watch out for harassment. After being there for a couple of months, one of the older associates hit on me relentlessly. I denied his advances repeatedly, but he never stopped. That's why I left. The icing on top is the month of notice required for resignation. I ignored this and simply didn't get paid because I couldn't take it anymore. You have to be extremely desperate to work here.
