Pros

Work from home and a good computer

Cons

Unorganized onboarding process – no clear expectations or project ownership outlined upon starting. Lack of internal alignment – leadership was not on the same page regarding project goals or team responsibilities. Instructed not to begin meaningful work – delays and unclear direction led to wasted time and uncertainty. No secured funding – hiring occurred without confirmed budget or long-term financial planning. Poor communication from upper management – decisions were influenced by internal disputes rather than performance. Short-sighted hiring – brought on prematurely and laid off due to factors unrelated to role execution.

Pros

As a fully remote software engineer, I am part of a swarm of new hires - most of the team has been there for less than a year. The team is smart and talented and seems to have been filtered to keep or jerks and aholes. The work involves learning a lot of interesting new skills and the structure is loose enough that you can choose your own path. So far, I am happy to have started my new job here. (I have already recommended working here to a friend.)

Cons

I see two challenges: First, as a fully remote team, we have to work harder to learn to trust and rely on each other. Second, as a relatively small company in a field dominated by industry giants, there is a speculative nature to the enterprise - it is hard to fully predict (for better and worse) what will happen in the next year, in the next few years.

Pros

Working Remote was a plus

Cons

In the year I was there, I had 4 different managers. Vertex does not value employees other than white men that came from other big corporations that they failed at. They put “woman-owned” to look pretty and win contracts but the leadership decisions are all old white men that continue the instability that is Vertex. If you need a transitional job, work here, but don’t expect to stay long.
