Pros

Pay is the main reason I’m currently with UP. The people I work with (not management) are awesome. Healthcare is good but fading.

Cons

Where do I even start… I’m currently seeking employment elsewhere. That’s right, leaving $100k job. I’m happily willing to take a pay cut to get away from this place. Substance abuse is common, Divorce rate is extremely high, and Family life is the worst and suicide is common. Being divorced and trying to have a life with my kids is extremely hard. When I’m supposed to be off for 48 hours yet I’m called back to work in 10 hours. When you work all night long just to get home to pick your kids up and have to stay up all day with them just to get called back to work with no sleep is common. Anxiety is no stranger, mental health is poor and trying to be a father is difficult. Management is there to belittle you or fire you. If you’re thinking about applying because you hear about the pay, I want you to understand it comes at a cost. Marriage, kids family etc…Not to mention Union Pacific furloughs all the time, and they’re currently trying to eliminate the conductor position along with other crafts.

Pros

Good pay and benefits. Work is challenging.

Cons

Weak lower and middle management - they only care about their own careers. Poor morale. UP went down hill after Jim Young passed away.
