Pros

Tremendous opportunity to develop teams, mentor subordinates, and develop professional toolkit. Travel the world (not just Iraq and Afghanistan!) and interact with some of the sharpest professionals from other gov't agencies, services, and allied and partner nations. Challenging and rewarding for the adventurous and resilient. Great pay and unbeatable benefits.

Cons

If staying put is a priority, the military is not for you. 2-4 year stints is typical, with 3 years in one location the standard. Children move from school to school and learn to make new friends and stay connected with old with social websites. Deployments require time away from family, but proper planning and preparation and a positive attitude ease the separation.

Pros

Teaches you a trade while paying you. Social appreciation. Purpose. If you have no idea what you want to do with your life especially as far as a career goes, run to a recruiter. Regardless of whereever you come from a military career is your stepping stone into middle class and up living and career opportunity.

Cons

Every extra dollar you attempt to make beyond your rank will require more work than you will be paid to do. The real payoff monetarily you get from competing in the military will come in to play during your post life. Confidence, courage, accountability, etc are not standard attributes in people at all.
