Pros

The Air Force and AF Reserve has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life. My decision to pursue an AF career has created untold opportunities for me and laid the foundation of my entire civilian career. I have yet to see a civilian company that can match the medical/vacation and quality of life benefits that the AF provides.

Cons

As with any corporation, the AF and Dept of Defense can experience downsizing. Unfortunately, I had to separate from active duty due to 'force shaping' along with 1000's of my peers AF wide. Work/life balance sacrifices are a part of the deal and one must accept that the needs of the service will always trump personal priorities. The AF Reserve tends to be much more flexible in this arena.

Pros

Teaches you a trade while paying you. Social appreciation. Purpose. If you have no idea what you want to do with your life especially as far as a career goes, run to a recruiter. Regardless of whereever you come from a military career is your stepping stone into middle class and up living and career opportunity.

Cons

Every extra dollar you attempt to make beyond your rank will require more work than you will be paid to do. The real payoff monetarily you get from competing in the military will come in to play during your post life. Confidence, courage, accountability, etc are not standard attributes in people at all.
