Pros

Meaningfull work, field-based agency, leaders in global displacement affairs (although this is slipping a bit), depending on position chance to make direct large-scale impact.

Cons

Stuck in the 1980s with the way of work although the current High Commissioner is trying to change things up. An agency based on connections and taunting the party line, little reward for working hard and coming up with creative ideas that can benefit thousands of life. Not enough reflection on how to tackle corruption in humanitarian operations. Lack of training, particularly for managers, which reflects way of working. Re-invents the wheel every time, not enough usage of lessons learnt in operations. Budgets are divided unequally over humanitarian operations.

Pros

Good benefits, you really do help people

Cons

Human Resources takes a highly specialized approach to talent management. In that you cannot really change functions easily in UNHCR. You have to hyper-specialize in one area. So if you are a protection staff, you tend to burn out from trauma without an internal mechanism to alleviate the burnout. The higher you go in UNHCR, the crazier you become.
