Pros

UMO allow independent work... until they don't.

Cons

UMO has a professional and sincere staff but C-level is the bad apple that ruins the bunch: - I experienced that UMO offer the Specialist Mentor role under a zero hours contract that ensures the maximum benefit for the organisation.and lower for clients and lowest still for the Mentors. - I experienced that UMO was to be reminded a week after my probation period was up (on a zero hours contract?) and was hastily told me I had passed it. - I experienced that UMO agreed to place me on a permanent contract to assist with my development and when reminded 5 weeks later that directors had "misunderstood" and reneged on this promise. - I experienced that UMO despite having shared legal information with and reasonable notice given that an unlawful deduction was being requested from my wages. I had to go to an Employment Tribunal to recover the stolen funds. - When challenged, I experienced that C-level of UMO pretended to have forgotten or even worse, on occasion, pretend that work was not being completed by myself in an attempt to 'distance' themselves from the conflict. They purposely attempted to disparage my work in attempt to discredit me which I successfully captured for the tribunal. - When a conflict emerged as to the best interests of the clients I experienced that UMO would position themselves as the authoritarian and that the best interests of the client were not as important as requesting senior actioning. This compromised the client/mentor relationship which effectively lowered the therapeutic alliance and quality of work that was offered. - I experienced the C-level offer me a second role with a developing area after internal interview only to ignore requests for start dates and any mention of the role thereafter despite watching colleagues go on to work in those roles. - It is my view from my experience at UMO that the term 'Mentor' is positioned as 'helping' but utilises experienced clinicians without having the necessary support of accredited bodies to challenge them i.e. the BACP, UKCP. Any genuine practitioners should avoid this organisation until leadership shifts.
