A great community that is stifled by bureaucracy - Administrative Assistant III UC Riverside Employee Review

Pros

Like most universities, UCR has a comprehensive benefits package, plenty of time off (the Winter break is especially nice if you have accrued time), reduced tuition, and so on. The Chancellor seems to be pretty approachable and the campus works hard to recruit and retain a diverse student body. They don't have a huge operating budget like other campuses in the UC system, but they do the best they can with what funding they have (for the most part).

Cons

As my title says, there's so much red tape! Not unlike many schools and corporations, decisions come from the top from people who don't work where you are and have NO idea what workload is manageable. Each employee in my unit was easily doing the work of two (or more) people, but there were no raises or cost of living adjustments for several years (even before I came onboard). They do okay to try to provide internal opportunities, but for the most part, there's little room to advance in your current role. You would pretty much have to apply for another position on campus to move up or around.
