Pros

Fun place to work, decent union.

Cons

It genuinely costs money to work here. They talk a big game about EDI, with zero actual initiative. Employees are being asked to pay 30$ for background checks by HR, even after years of service, despite the policy previously having simply been filling out a form. Not only this, they slash your hours constantly, so you pay to get no hours. HR is super unprofessional. Discriminatory hiring practices, requiring a driver's license where it is not a core duty, violating OHRC subsections 23(2) and 11(1). Management is unclear about expectations and sets contradictory goals.

Pros

Proud to work at Toronto Zoo! Work is meaningful and you feel you are making a difference, there is room for growth, DEI programs are very well developed, and I think the new CEO is doing great work with the company vision/strategic plan.

Cons

Non-perm and contract work has cons (benefits, lack of long-term stability, etc) but it could be mitigated by a better work-life balance ( i.e. working from home and flex hours, especially for office jobs). TZ says work-life balance is important but this does not seem to be well-integrated into policies for contract staff.
