High Expectations for Low Pay - Account Specialist Tier One Partners Employee Review

Pros

I learned a lot at Tier One. I also made some lasting friendships.

Cons

I did learn a lot, but even if you express wanting to grow in a certain area, they will likely ignore it and pigeonhole you into what they want you to do. There's a major disconnect between the Boston and Chicago offices. Each location has completely different job functions and more often than not, neither office knows what's happening in the other (although Boston gets more recognition). Chicago management is unprofessional, emotionally manipulative, and causes distress amongst employees. Very hard to work with. The pay is horrible. There's an expectation for you to be passionate about your job and work overtime, yet they haven't adjusted their entry level salary in years, despite inflation. There's also zero room for growth. You will not get more responsibility, even if you've been there for nine years. Also, there's no paid maternity leave. Finally, turnover is extremely high.

Tier One Partners Response

Thank you for your response. We value feedback as an important tool for growth and appreciate the time you took to provide it. We would like to take a moment to address some of your concerns. But first, we are glad you feel you learned a lot while working at Tier One and made lasting friendships. We remain committed to providing a rewarding workplace that fosters ongoing professional development for our employees. After reviewing your concerns, we would like to share some of the ways they have been addressed in recent years. We moved to an agency-wide annual review process in 2020, with the goal of more clearly mapping out career paths for our employees. Our new process is more collaborative and puts an emphasis on addressing employees’ professional goals. Tier One is also always working hard to strengthen the relationships between offices through our All Hands Calls, culture activities, brainstorms, and more. Over the past 18 months, our remote work practices assisted with that goal and we resumed our office exchange program early this summer for fully vaccinated employees. We conduct regular salary and compensation reviews to be competitive with other agencies of our size and scope and have made salary adjustments accordingly when appropriate. We instituted a paid parental leave policy in response to an employee's need In 2018, which is detailed in our employee handbook. As with all feedback we receive, we will reflect on your suggestions to identify additional areas of improvement. Thank you for your comments, Marian Hughes, Co-Founder & Managing Partner Kathy Wilson, Co-Founder & Managing Partner Sue Parente, Co-Founder & Managing Partner

Pros

-Fantastic work-life balance, better than my previous agency experience -Gained valuable experience working with a variety of clients in highly regulated industries (financial services, healthcare) -A true collaborative environment – no job is too small for any team member. During my first few months, one of the co-founders even offered to help with pitching -Leadership is respectful of employee schedules and allows for flexibility (at the time of my departure, we were following a hybrid schedule) -Professional development is prioritized both in the form of various PD events and performance reviews -Beyond client work, I had a positive experience working on different agency special ops teams (marketing, sales, etc.); each employee is a member of at least one special ops -Great company culture, and the culture event team takes care in planning fun events for the agency

Cons

-As a smaller agency, ensuring full coverage during PTO/absences requires dedicated coordination and proactive planning -Participating in special ops teams is rewarding but can add an extra layer of responsibility alongside client deliverables

Pros

- Great leaders that care about the growth and development of the younger members on the team - There is a conscious effort to help maintain a positive work-life balance - A very collaborative work environment - Provided great opportunities to get experience across a range of different industries, both B2B and B2C - A perfect mix of a hybrid work schedule

Cons

- There was some turnover with clients while I was there but that is to be expected at an agency (plus it was nice to be able to get different experience as new clients were introduced)
