Pros

The quant industry is hard to break into, and this firm isn’t a bad place to start. You may get the chance to learn things end-to-end, and depending on your desk, you could be trusted with meaningful tasks early on, which is a great opportunity. The culture is generally positive — most people are approachable and willing to help you learn.

Cons

Training quality varies greatly desk to desk - if you’re unlucky, you may end up stuck with repetitive or low-value tasks for a long time. The company has struggled with profitability for years and suffers from consistently high turnover, not just among graduates. If you’re on a temporary visa, this could put you in a precarious position. It’s also confusing to see them hiring new graduates from overseas while letting go of existing performing employees.

Pros

Relaxed office environment, largely programmer-led and technically literate, Australian informality and camaraderie, lunches provided free, table tennis, pretty decent health insurance and 401k

Cons

Low salaries, difficulty working across time zones, untrustworthy management doesn’t lead or inspire confidence, succession of people arriving and leaving disgruntled, too focused on option market-making to survive the ups and downs of the economic cycle.
