Pros
As a very large not-for-profit organization, Thrivent has some of the best parts of a non-profit (strong mission, no shareholder pressures, etc.) and some of the best parts of a corporation (good benefits, salaries, technology, etc.)
Cons
Because there are no "direct" competitors it can become somewhat insular in its thinking and operations. There are surely other insurance competitors but the not-for-profit nature changes how the game is played.
