Great potential hindered by poor decisions and mismanagement - Anonymous employee The Smart Local Employee Review

Pros

The company had a solid foundation, being one of the early pioneers as a local media publishing house, and previously showed signs of strong growth potential. Met many passionate and competent individuals within the teams, many go above and beyond to keep things moving despite internal roadblocks. Pantry and the occasional PR drops are a plus.

Cons

Instead of hiring experienced talent or fairly compensating existing staff who are taking on increased responsibilities, management continues to push forward with projects under unrealistic expectations and insufficient support. Senior leadership, both past and present, can be petty and at times lack the practical experience necessary to lead effectively. While not all are incompetent, a concerning number are ill-equipped to manage teams or drive the company forward. There are ~senior~ individuals who lack the competence or accountability required for their roles. With no proper mentorship or senior management oversight to guide these so-called "seniors," their inefficiencies often go unchecked. Unfortunately (or rather, fortunately for them), their shortcomings are regularly covered by more capable teammates, which inevitably leads to burnout and frustration. They’re lucky to be at TSL, where they can continue to operate in ignorance. That said, it can still be a decent place to start a media career if you're looking for exposure and some fun. Just don’t expect strong leadership, clear career progression, or long-term growth support.

Pros

A flexible clock-in time is one of the few notable benefits offered by the company.

Cons

I'd say most people here are friendly and supportive. However, there is still some workplace toxicity at times. Considering the workload and expectations, the compensation does not feel proportionate to the amount of work required. In addition, the promotion process lacks clear standardization and transparency, which can make career progression feel uncertain.
