Unrivaled Resources and Talent Trumped by Poor HR and Managerial Practices - Program Coordinator The Nature Conservancy Employee Review

Pros

- Organization with vast resources to bring to bear on an issue or subject area - A renewed commitment to intersectional diversity and inclusion appears to be making strides in the TNC workplace - State chapter model is powerful tool to engage communities in a way that best suits the community in question, rather than a heavy-handed top-down approach - At the World Office (WO), there are numerous working groups and "extracurricular" organizations to connect TNC employees across divisions and floors

Cons

- Managerial quality is not standard across the organization, with a mixed bag of outstanding managers and ones who do not take managerial best practices and standards seriously. These include very basic best practices of how to deliver timely feedback, set goals for their team, privacy concerns regarding personal information, encouraging and allowing professional development, and identifying and responding to workflow problems. - Unprofessional HR, including being told when meeting in person to file a workplace complaint that "I know [the manager] and that doesn't sound like them. You should be careful what you say about your coworkers." This was my only one-on-one interaction with an HR employee and it was extremely negative and disheartening. - Uncompetitive compensation - Uninspiring growth and promotion potential

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am very sorry to hear about your experience. It's disheartening being, that I am a member of the HR team and that does not reflect the support we are committed to providing to our colleagues. I do want to inform you that the HR department has recently revamped our 2 day supervising training workshop required for all supervisors and managers. This workshop focuses on managing challenges, coaching, importance of great leadership, etc. Please contact us directly at recruiting@tnc so we can hear more about your experience and discuss ways to improve.

Pros

Some incredibly kind, smart, and passionate employees. Above average pay for a non-profit (could be better), fulfilling mission, great benefits (healthcare, PTO, 8% 401k match)

Cons

The higher up you go in the org, the worse it gets. Executive leadership is abysmal and they completely eroded trust in their ability to lead. Most of the C-suite needs to be replaced with people with higher EQ. Marketing in particular has an extremely toxic corporate culture that’s become immensely worse in the past 3-5 years. Layoffs were never a common occurrence, but in the last couple years, they happen with no rhyme or reason and those exact roles that were eliminated are seemingly reposted just mere weeks after folks are pushed out. Beware of what team you’re joining. It’s a mixed bag. Some amazing teams with incredible leadership, and some not.
