Pros

Before COVID, a job here had its perks, including good coworkers and travel opportunities. But all that was before its publisher laid off the majority of the staff (after getting PPP funding designed to help them keep their jobs). Now, the “magazine” consists of a skeleton crew of mostly junior staff who repackage old content and pass it off as something new.

Cons

The downside of working here has always been its publisher, who has no prior experience in the industry. There was never a meaningful long-term vision or set of values guiding the magazine’s operations (outside of trying to make it profitable at any and all costs). That resulted in a toxic workplace that left staff feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and burnt out, all while being chronically underpaid. Turnover and morale were huge problems long before COVID rocked the business.

Pros

The online workspace is well-organized, and co-workers are fast, clear communicators. Welcoming environment for newcomers, and dedicated to giving each intern a personalized educational work experience.

Cons

Their internship positions do not offer any internal growth in the company, and they are all unpaid.
