Pros

The client interaction is great and they make up a fantastix, career building network. Many even develop into friendships. When growth was easy, and before the senior officers became obsessed with cashing out, it was a very fun and dynamic place to work with plenty of camaraderie. I would have given them 5 stars back then. There are still a few individuals left who live by that culture. Some consultants are supportive and interested in working as a team. The same is true of the operations team. look carefully and you can find them. Their flagship program was effective though inexperienced trainers are affecting quality. Memorizing a script takes precedence over executing a deeper understanding of the material.

Cons

Every organization will experience growing pains and will have some degree of office politics. This place is simply the extreme. As the obsession for cash out took over, management's attitude changed and that affected everyone. Team building activities have a debatable impact. You can't go into an organization that plays mind games for a living and not expect to get caught in the psychological fray. Ethics are questionable. Just pay attention to employee LinkedIn profiles. In pursuit of a sale they will promise clients experienced negotiators when the many newer "consultants" are well rehearsed trainers who have rarely conducted commercial negotiations. Most with real experience have left or no longer conduct client work. And if you're a woman, brace yourself for a step back in time to a challenging culture. Get legal advice before you join and before you decide to leave. It's common knowledge that many leave seek legal representation upon exiting, whether voluntarily or involuntarily.

I read your comments with sadness. Your perceptions couldn’t be further from the vision we set out to achieve when we started the business and continue to strive for every day. Seeking feedback from the people who work here currently, I consistently get comments in direct contradiction to your views and the results of our annual culture survey indicates we are significantly above industry norms. One of our greatest sources of satisfaction as business leaders is the number of people who have achieved personal growth professionally and financially in sharing in the success that we have created together. I have never heard anyone encourage someone to lie here, in fact we have invested so heavily in our governance policies and internal training we have been commended by regulators for leading the industry in best practice. As a manager, there is no strength in being ‘conniving’ or ‘tactical’. Negotiation as a discipline is about psychology. You describe ‘playing mind games’ with a negative connotation – it is true that people negotiate with people and as such understanding human behaviour and emotion are at the heart of our philosophies and teaching. Understanding the other party’s perspective and level of satisfaction is key to a successful deal. Building trusted relationships in a commercial arena will always give a better outcome. Integrity is everything! It is core to the values we live by. Our Consultants come from a wide range of backgrounds and the vast majority have significant negotiation experience before joining. All have an absolute passion for the subject and gain negotiation experience very quickly here. Many are exceptional trainers who follow a clear structure to ensure consistency of quality and delivery that our clients value. A small number are unable to achieve our quality standards although our extremely low attrition rate for Consultants is market leading. We have a population of 60% men and 40% women. We have female representation at all levels of our business, many of whom have been with us for many years and life circumstances. Our attrition levels for men and women are similar, as are our culture survey results. We know that all employers can improve in this area, and so continue to explore how we can do this too. Your comment about needing legal advice when you leave is inaccurate. We do have a very few examples of employees leaving disgruntled, but these are extremely rare and we take each very seriously. The vast majority of those that leave stay in touch and several people have returned. We would welcome the chance to discuss your comments and try to make things right if possible. Pros

If you pay attention, you will leave here with an education money can't buy... a front-row seat to exactly how not to lead, build culture, or treat people. Learning what not to do is equally valuable as learning what to do, and this place is a masterclass in the former.

Cons

Advancement here is driven by proximity and likability, not performance or results. When someone reaches the top of the organization from a background with no relevant experience in the company's core function, it tells you everything about how decisions get made and who gets protected when they go wrong. If the company has a standard for skills and expertise, it appears to be applied selectively. Leadership here is skilled at one thing above all else: protecting itself. When difficult situations arise, the response is rarely accountability. It's reorganization and RIF's. Missed goals and failed strategies are absorbed by the employees who had no hand in making them. Critical thinking is welcomed here right up until it inconveniences someone with a title. The people positioned to ask hard questions tend to find themselves quietly moved out. Toxic employees get protected. Hard-working people who genuinely care about the company get discarded. Those who leave tend to either build competing businesses or take their talents to more relevant competitors. After 25 years in business, remarkably few alumni speak fondly of this place. That says everything. The ego here is extraordinary and entirely disconnected from the results. Leadership is convinced it has all the answers, resistant to outside perspective, logic, or common sense, and quick to blame employees for the consequences of its own poor strategy. The confidence would be admirable if it were earned. For a company that talks constantly about moving forward, it spends a remarkable amount of energy repeating the same mistakes. There is a deeply held belief here that the company is special. From the outside looking back, it is less than ordinary in every way that matters except the dysfunction, which is exceptional. If you're someone who keeps your head down and fits the social dynamic, you may thrive here. If you ask questions, document your contributions carefully.

We won't attempt to counter a review written with this much conviction point by point. What we will say is that we recognise the themes you've raised; around how advancement is determined, how accountability is handled, and what happens to people who ask hard questions; are ones that matter deeply to us as an organisation, and ones we are actively working on. We are proud of what The Gap Partnership has built over 29 years, but we are not complacent about the culture we need to sustain that. The best organisations are ones that can hear criticism honestly and act on it. We hope to be one of those. We're sorry your experience ended the way it did. We wish you well.
