Pros
The Fleet is such a great place to work that many employees, at various levels, have come back to work here twice--or more! Balboa Park is a wonderful setting in which to work, and the Fleet is a dynamic organization. We open multiple films and exhibitions each year, and we operate a number of cutting-edge programs that take place in the community, from 52 Weeks of Science to Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar. The Fleet sees more than 400,000 visitors each year and it has a robust membership base. This organization has big plans for the future.
Cons
The Fleet has more than 100 employees, which most people are surprised to know. Unfortunately, though, there's not necessarily a lot of room for career growth, because department staffs are usually small. I do feel that most managers try to promote from within whenever possible, though. With the small staffs comes a heavy workload for most of those individuals in management. Being a nonprofit, the salaries are not competitive with corporate wages. However, there is an insurance plan that is no cost to the employee, so that's a big benefit. ... Not to mention free admission to pretty much every museum in San Diego, plus the Zoo and Safari Park.
