Pros

The State is one of the largest employers in the Austin area, since it's the capital. Moving between agencies isn't looked at so much as changing jobs as it is getting a promotion. The benefits are pretty good with the state. But, there are more perks working for a state university.

Cons

Working for the state means accepting that the pay will be lower than non-state job. But it used to be that the benefits made up for it. However, over the last 15 years the benefits have eroded to a point that non-state jobs have better benefits and better pay. So, the only other reason would be job security. However, that no longer applies either.
