Pros

I found that working with the customers was extremely rewarding because people that are truly concerned with their photos tend be generally all around good people. Don't get me wrong, it goes the other way, too, but the great customers that were regulars made it worth it. Being able to print your own work, closely control the process, and have access to all the equipment was probably one of the biggest perks. The staff was great and friendly, you would usually show up at work on your days off just to say hi.

Cons

Management at Techlab was difficult. The attitude was unprofessional and praise was hard to come by. There were many times where an employee would go above and beyond only to be unrecognized. Some people were fired for no real reason. There was generally no respect for employees. Trust was an issue, as well. A lot of the time it felt as if you were being watched and scrutinized even though you would do nothing to provoke this. Insurance was available, but mostly unaffordable on our hourly pay. There were also a lot of empty promises made regarding raises.

Pros

It was easy to work your hours around your schedule. You meet a lot of other photographers and being with co-workers in a smaller space was a lot of fun. It's also nice to have the balance of behind the counter sales and technician stuff in the back.

Cons

Pay was way too little. This is a small local store where you figure the environment will be a lot more open, especially between management and staff but unfortunately it is not. Management would routinely fire decent workers for no discernible reason or be needlessly critical. If you're a few minute late, you will get chastised for it. If you want to try something new, that won't happen. Management just sticks to what you know/have been trained in and doesn't really allow you to explore anything else.

Techlab Photo Imaging Response
10y
I feel I need to respond to this review. I know I'm not Mark Zuckerberg, but this review is flat out false. They must have clicked on the wrong company. Responses to each point : Pay - applicants and employers discuss compensation at the time of hire and agreed upon. Employees also understand that this is a small business and though I wish to pay everyone at least the proposed minimum wage of $15 / hr, we can't do that. Firings - of the last 10 employees who've left, 2 were firings. The rest were voluntary including two that moved, one started their own business, one went back to school, and one became a teacher. We do not fire on a regular basis. Lateness - one minute, no. a regular 5-10, yes, you should be told about that. As far as not allowing trying something new, everyone in the store does at least 5 things, starting with learning the counter - selling, taking orders, checking out, etc. After that, you go to scanning and film processing. After that you learn any of the following - printing, digital work, video transfers, cutting mats, etc. Thank you for reading.
