Pros

No pros- it's like a very, very bad dream. The majority of employees who work there only do so for the pay and are mostly a collective of uninspiring and odd people. From my first day I felt like a dark cloud had surrounded my very soul. Think of a modern day dictatorship and that would be a very apt description of this organisation. There is no middle management layer, just a couple of senior figures and a highly disingenuous lieutenant with sociopathic tendencies; and eyes on the big prize of windfall when the company sells. No HR function exists so if you have a problem you can't really take it to anyone. If you do you'll be marked as trouble maker. If you get sacked you'll have to go down a tribunal rote before you get anywhere. Employee tribunals are common. Every morning a register is taken, a woman walks round with a big book and a pen. The sight of this person doing this job would literally leave me dumfounded and make me imagine what life may have been like for a Jew holed up in Auschwitz. This is clearly a strategy to remind employees that they are being watched at all times.

Cons

What can one say? - Based in Staines which is awful. No HR function, no middle management. Unambitious employees. Utterly unprofessional right across the board. Careerwise, if this place isn't the end of the line, then I would struggle to think of a worse work environment. Lunchtime involves a walk into Staines town centre passing by heron addicts, Irish gypsies and miserable looking colleagues. Some of the employees are ok, they admit what the place is like and just stay for the money. The only employees who seem to like it there are those who suck up to leadership. You can tell who they are because they gossip too much and come across to you like they are your friend. They are the last ones to leave at the end of the day, so they can report about you to the leadership, and they keep a little file on their computer which contains details of your comings and goings. When not behaving like a snitch, they are boring you all day long with their banal and limited conversation. Pity for these employees is all I used to feel.

Pros

The company offers good job stability and a sense of long-term security, which is something many people value, especially in uncertain economic times. There is a clear focus on delivering reliable, compliant software to customers, and the organisation takes its responsibility to clients seriously. There are genuinely good people working here — supportive, friendly, and willing to help. Day-to-day collaboration with colleagues is generally positive, and team members often go out of their way to share knowledge and unblock each other when needed. Tax Systems is also in the process of modernising its products and moving towards cloud-based solutions, which creates opportunities to work on large-scale, complex systems with real business impact. For those interested in enterprise software and regulated industries, this can be valuable experience. Work–life balance is the best you could have, with predictable working hours and an understanding that people have lives outside of work. The environment is very low-pressure compared to some fast-paced tech companies.

Cons

Decision-making can be slow and overly cautious, particularly when it comes to product and design improvements. Changes often require multiple layers of approval, which can significantly reduce momentum and make it difficult to iterate quickly or respond to user feedback in a timely way. The organisation is still heavily influenced by legacy products and ways of working. While there is talk of modernisation and cloud transformation, in practice progress can feel incremental rather than transformative. This can be frustrating for people coming from more modern product-led or agile environments. Innovation is not strongly incentivised. There is limited space for experimentation, risk-taking, or trying new approaches, which may feel restrictive for people who thrive in fast-moving, innovative environments.

Pros

Everyone bought in to what the business is trying to achieve. Leadership are open and collaborative. As everyone is bought in, people seem to go above and beyond to help out. A happy client base and products that do what they say they will, which can be rarity in tech!

Cons

None at this point in time.
