Pros

Thirdwave was a great small company to work at! It is intimate and you will need to be a scrappy individual willing to learn new skills which I always thought was exciting. - Great hours, typically you will work a 9-5 day - It was a small but diverse team! There can always be more women engineers though - The management is receptive to feedback and open communication - The office is an open floor plan with plenty of space and whiteboards for brainstorming - Thirdwave is centrally located(you are in the thick of river north). What is an especially good perk is you get a discount at the yoga studio in the building and the hair salon is pretty fabulous. I would encourage you to patron the establishments over lunch - There is usually good music playing depending on who's DJing - You are given the best electronic digs depending on if it is an Apple or a Linux machine you prefer - Sponsorships to conferences is available if you ask - Free subscription to pluralsight - One pair of cubs season tickets, if you are into that sort of thing - Beers on Fridays - Summer hours are an awesome perk you get out at 2:00 PM on Fridays [Memorial Day - Labor Day] - There is a Christmas and summer outing. They did cancel one summer outing while I worked there and that wasn’t ideal - You get exposure to some pretty cool non-profit projects so there is a feel good component to the work - Lunch and learns on Wednesday - free pizza!

Cons

Small companies come with their set of advantages and disadvantages. It is not the company’s fault but some of the perks VC funded companies can provide can’t be matched here, such as unlimited vacation, unlimited snacks, FSA spending accounts etc… - Unfortunately, the health benefits are slightly pricey and their insurance network isn’t very good - No Dental - No Vision - No commuter benefits - There is no 401 K matching - There is no paid parental leave - There is a strict vacation and sick day policy. I believe when I initially started it was 10 vacation days and 3 sick days (I believe it is 5 sick days now) - You are awarded 12 remote days some additional days can be negotiated - There aren’t enough team building activates - Salaries can be very variable

Pros

The office atmosphere is really great. It's an open floor plan with great equipment and there is typically pleasant ambient music playing from the speakers. Management is incredibly friendly and fun to talk with. Summer hours are great as well (everyone leaves early on Fridays).

Cons

I didn't have any cons while working at Thirdwave

Pros

Mostly friendly employees Summer hours - Friday at 2:00 1 Summer outing Exposure to variety of frontend technologies. (Angular, React, JavaScript) Good location for restaurants

Cons

Poor benefits: 2 weeks/year earned PTO that does NOT roll over and will NOT be reimbursed if unused. 12 WFH days/year. Expensive health insurance, company does not cover HSA administration fee. None matching 401K with poor portfolio. Poor amenities: Bad furniture, office offers no coffee, drinking water is dirty, bad WiFi, bad temperature regulation. Uncomfortable in colder days. No career advancement: With only 13 people in the company, there is no career path. The company also avoids giving raise/bonus Lack of focus: There is no specific product that the company is an expert of, most projects are pieced together with various technologies/solutions. While the company claims it is technology agnostic but it's really lack of domain knowledge. Management/culture: Deceptive to employees and tries to avoid responsibility/accountability. When things don't go as expected management will point blame at others. There is no structure and process to the company, everything is ad hoc based. The technology expert/lead derails every meeting/discussion and over complicate simple tasks/projects.

Thanks for the post here and props to the friendly team here at Thirdwave for making the list of Pros. Regarding the list of Cons and the Advice, it seems there is a lot to unpack and we would love if you could give us a call, or email to discuss the conversation that is shared above. Although we may have differing views on many of the comments, it is important to us that we also learn from our collective experiences. Our environment is one that supports knowledge sharing, professional growth and the day to day efforts of each and every one of us. We work alongside our clients and partners to build solutions to very complex and high value use cases. It seems there was a gap in our working relationship and for that we apologize. For more than 20 years, we have and continue to also hold our alumni in very high regard. We respect their desire to expand into new and challenging roles while looking back and appreciating the Thirdwave experience. The phone is near, and we welcome a call from you to keep in touch either way.
