Pros

SPC is close to the DARPA with adequate parking and comfortable, well appointed offices. My collogues were both intelligent and congenial. The hours were flexible and jr. management is ameanable to granting limited time-off for doctor appointments, etc.

Cons

Sr. Management does not adequately communicate to the rank & file employees. Most of the communication between sr. management and the employees is verbal. Few orders are given in writing. This frustrates the employees and makes traceability all but impossible. This also promotes employee feelings of ill-will toward Sr. management. Capital expenditures requests, to improve scientific equipment and instruments, were routinely denied. As a result, the scientific equipment is antiquated and largely unmaintained. Sr. management held lavish parties to celebrate contract awards, which came out of the overhead budget. Therefore, Reductions in Force (RIFs) became common place at SPC, which bills itself as a company with low employee turnover. Thus, restricting the number of hours that the employees can charge to overhead. Sr. management routinely ignored reason, observation and logic, and made important business decisions based upon their "gut feelings". Many times this resulted in SPC losing a lucrative government contract to the competition. The salary compensation is below average. The benefits are well below average.
