Cons

The management is stressed and it impacts us, the workers. They are constantly spouting "Nobody wants to work." No one wants to work for minimum wage, an inflexible schedule, rude customers, and condescending managers. I have never in my life worked a job as stressful as this for only minimum wage. The discount is 40% off of full-priced non-electric items but is not worth it in the end. You can find things for more than 40% off at Homegoods, Williams-Sonoma, Saks, etc. You will not be paid enough to afford more than a few kitchen gadgets a month on top of your rent. It would be better to wait and purchase items as they go on sale if you really want them from Sur La Table. The electronics discount is 20% off of full-priced items and you can only buy one a month. They have twice-a-year times when you can buy one for 40% off however, again, if you catch Williams-Sonoma, Saks, Homegoods, Home Depot, Kitchenaid, Bed Bath & Beyond, and more on a good day, you may be able to snag a better deal. Even if you work full-time, you do not get benefits. Only managers do. The customers are rude. This is not the only retail job that I've worked and I am well aware that the customers at Sur La Table are a special breed of clientele. A red flag is that they hire people on the spot because their turnover is so high. I was never honestly trained to do anything except for check in on customers. I would constantly have to pull management away from their work to teach me how to use the registers, clean things, and more. One time, I was asked to package the Amazon orders but I had never been taught how to. Due to their high turnover, they do not get to select staff that works well together. There have been so many small tiffs, fights, and bickering among the staff. My coworkers do not want to work the cash register and leave me alone with a line of customers when there is no management around. I have to flag them down to take a few customers. There is no career growth. Your raises will be in line with minimum wage increases. The culture of Sur La Table is to talk about customers behind their backs. There are a lot of employees at my location who felt it was okay to pass off customers on to each other so that they would not have to talk to people. Don't expect to get trained on anything in the store except the store layout. Other than that, it is up to you to find out more about product knowledge. Which would not be a problem if someone were to specialize in an area like knives, technology, etc. We were expected to float the entire store and have knowledge about everything. We don't wear walkie-talkies or earpieces so if you need to find someone to ask a question, you better know where they are otherwise you will walk around the entire store and waste time. I completely understand now why Sur La Table is struggling as a company. Their future does not seem promising. I would never recommend anyone take this job even as a last resort.
