Pros
As a student at UC Davis, I worked at Davis Summer House as a DSP for almost four years. It was a wonderful experience as I was able to build great relationships with the home's residents and my fellow staff members. I felt fulfilled in my work and greatly enjoyed taking part in education efforts, fun activities, and outings. The staff was very supportive and I made good friends with most of my colleagues. This position helped me build great non-profit experience and disability advocacy training.
Cons
While I greatly enjoyed this position, it is not one that should be taken lightly. It is a serious position in which you are working hands-on helping handle occasional behavioral complications and day-to-day personal struggles. These situations can be stressful at times and requires a level head and professional attitude. This position takes someone who is empathetic, compassionate, and who is dedicated to making the lives of others better. With those qualities, this position is amazing and extremely rewarding.
