Dysfunctional and lurching from crisis to crisis - Senior Manager Standard Chartered Bank Employee Review

Pros

Good perks - free and cheap tickets to concerts, drinks in the office on Fridays. Some opportunities to travel to other markets (depends on your line manager - some are keener on travel than others), good commitment to flexible working (again, depending on manager). Highly multicultural and international, which makes the work often interesting.

Cons

Very long working hours (on email from 6am to 10pm, in office from 7.30am to 7pm, frequently later, on occasions until 3am). Resourcing gaps rarely filled - when half the team went on maternity leave, the rest of us were given double workloads as "stretching objectives" only to be passed over for bonuses and promotions. Poor management culture; decisions and progression based on who you know and are friends with rather than skill or experience. Management don't value subject matter expertise. Extremely low morale; many jobs were cut, others walked at the same time. People left are those who can't leave because of visas, or who simply can't get another job. Frustratingly bad IT. Clunky old kit, limited access to any online tools that would make the job easier. Made a big song and dance about a new intranet but it seems the same as the old one only with more corporate banner ads. Takes days to get basic IT or HR problems fixed.
