Pros

• Competitive teacher pay for the area, • Attendance bonuses • One-to-one Apple devices for students and Apple laptop provided for teacher use • A variety of current teaching resources • Most coworkers are helpful and want the best for the students

Cons

• There are LOADS of red-tape throughout the district, especially technology (for example, has a list of "approved" websites that must be followed, and if you want to use any website not on the list you must submit a request to be allowed to use it, even if you have vetted it yourself). • Major lack of teacher autonomy and academic freedom • Boxed and scripted curriculum that must be followed "with fidelity" that lacks support for special education students and below-level students • The district consistently jumps on the newest bandwagon for educational programs and no program lasts more than 2-3 years • The district is very top-heavy with lots of higher-ups making six-figure salaries giving out constant new directives for teachers • The current superintendent (Dr. Hill) does not value teaching staff or ideas and has a short fuse with anyone who seems to challenge him •There is a very weak teacher's union that consistently caves to the wants of the district versus the needs of the teachers it is supposed to represent. I'm sure there is more I have left out but this gives you an idea of the current work environment for teachers at SCS.

Pros

The school that I work at is only 8 minutes away. We have a great team of 3 paraprofessionals and 1 teacher in the room o f 8 students. We work well together. We all have our role in the classroom that helps transitions work smoothly.

Cons

We have a very difficult, stressful room this year. Our students frequently scream and sometimes cry. Our students are a range of disabilities, including Autistic, and extreme behaviors. We have one student that we have to watch carefully full-time because she dashes out the door and down the hall very fast.

Pros

Compensation and benefits. They pay the most in Springfield.

Cons

Barely any plan time and whatever you have plan time is taken up in behaviors, meetings and personal development that is not apply to you. You are expected to adhere to a general education curriculum, but you have no time to adapt it and then children with severe special needs must take formative assessments on the curriculum. There is no supervision and you are often left on your own and expected to complete a mountain of work that you will never complete meanwhile, you’re fighting behaviors because you’re struggling teaching your children, basic communication skills, and basic behaviors with no support.
