Currently involved in a major transition due to the merger of Springer and Nature; many systems (payroll, HR, IT, etc. as well as production systems, other business systems, online platform etc.) have been changed within the last year or so or will soon, and the transitions have been distinctly rocky (e.g. network outages, inability to print, new online HR system not compatible with current versions of most browsers, etc.) Company is currently in cost-cutting and standardization mode that runs the risk of greatly reducing the value added they provide to customers, which could ultimately cause them to wither on the vine as authors and customers simply switch to free online preprint servers and the like.
