Poor newsroom leadership, HR is worthless - Anonymous employee Spectrum Employee Review

Pros

Clean, well-maintained main facility. Co-workers are generally very pleasant and caring. High energy, fast-paced, and a very wide span of news coverage. Parent company benefits are decent and includes free cable with full access to premiums. Highly successful social media program (thanks to one very talented individual). They give you lots of cheesy logo schwag and logo shirts.

Cons

Everyone, including entry-level positions, required to sign 3-year contract w/6 mo. no-compete...definitely NOT the norm for the industry. High turnover rate. People willing to take the early release penalty to get out of purgatory. Very limited opportunities for professional growth. Poor scheduling of resources--always questioning your O.T. excesses--managers don't read the O.T. sheets they require you to turn in. Field crews work extremely hard--average about 3 stories/day + live hits. Camera operators are required to do one-man satellite truck shots--definitely forbidden at other stations. HR is truly worthless there...exit interviews are required "because our parent company wants to know why there is a high turnover, so everything goes straight to the top so they can make things better." (Baloney.) Performance appraisals get approved by managers with whom you have no direct reporting. If you think you're going to earn an Emmy Award at this place, forget about it because the quality isn't there. They might (MIGHT) win one per year while the other stations clean-up. Your professional growth will be stunted here.
