Pros
As an innovative IoT Startup originally from Japan, I jumped in the application process with a knowledge the nature of their business, but no clue of what the company culture was like. My guesses were based on typical start-up lives showcased on social media - over-working, power plays, and...over-working. Potentially no time or no place for an individual with children. But after completion of each interviews I was mind blown by the amount of care that this company showed to make sure my situation was heard - even as a mere "candidate" of the position. After joining Soracom it was pleasant to find out that their demeanor was not just through the interview process, but actually maintained and encouraged on a daily basis as well. It is rare to find a team with a level of maturity and empathy that I feel that many of us have forgotten in the past, and the vision that the leaders share with us are compelling. The concept of Kaizen (Japanese word for improvement) happens daily, from company policies to employee mental health, to more.
Cons
At the end of the day, this is a start-up with many, highly capable, intelligent people. It is not easy. It most certainly isn't for everyone in terms of needed agileness and resilience. Though at the same time, the ask is relatively easy. 1. What can you commit? 2. Are you comfortable voicing your opinion? By commitment though, it doesn't mean sacrifice. If you can handle the responsibility to handle your own work-life balance, this place will support you. All you gotta do is "voice it out" and know your limits.
