No Growth, Stagnant Pay - Millworker Somerville Merchandising Employee Review

Pros

Steady enough workflow, often laidback. Good coworkers.

Cons

Zero growth for newer members. Poor atmosphere and requests will never be catered to, particularly pay. They boost 2% against 8% rising inflation. Tons of work for subpar and often almost criminally low pay (20 years of service at $17 hourly). Unbelievably bad communication that trickles from upper management to floor members. Very often slow and thus will be pulled to different buildings or departments. Great for people that want to settle, not for young people.

Pros

Somerville is a solid place to work and spend your workday. Team members and managers are really supportive. Projects can be challenging but fun. You actually get to use your voice and skills to be a real part of the process. The retail marketing industry is very demanding, but the teams here have the experience, and drive to make great things happen. I loved feeling part of a winning team and getting to see the final products out in the wild every day.

Cons

Intense deliverables, not much opportunity for remote work.

Pros

Job security is great, because no one else is willing to work for the low wages offered by the company that doesn’t meet the living standards for Toronto.

Cons

Low pay for required work. Heavy lifting. Poor management. Constant unplanned overtime and being out of town and away from family. Operated by inexperienced children of founder. Mistreatment of employees in warehouse and conditions that would rival China. Most upper (and incompetent) management is of European decent, while others do the actual heavy lifting.
