Pros

After working with SC for less than a year, it appears that there are opportunities for advancement for top performers (who can navigate the politics well). Company is growing. As a Field Energy Specialist generating leads in Home Depot, I have *a little* control over my income if I really hustle and am good at sales. Also, my direct supervisor is great, but I hear this can vary a lot. My numbers are high, so that's good I guess. Oh, and SolarCity seems to have a successful and innovative business model that leads the industry. So there's that.

Cons

The culture is very "bro-centric." No women in C-level positions and very few women VPs. Some top level execs (e.g. CRO) regularly uses 4-letter words and sexist language on company-wide sales huddles, which can be alienating. "Coolness" seems to be valued over education or intelligence. Very little control over your commission/livelihood, since leads are handed off to consultants who may or may not close your deals. Standing on concrete 40 hours/week. The job is simply lead gen, so it can quickly get boring. Lots of contests to hit high numbers, which you'd think would be a "pro," and it is to an extent, but contests with nearly impossible goals aren't motivating. Plus, not everyone cares about white water rafting trips. Profit-sharing/stock options and 401k matching (i.e. respect for all levels of employees) for quality work would be much more motivating. Alas. Other than an employee referral program, no such things exist. As an FES, you will be required to work all day every single Saturday and Sunday. There is very little, if any, wiggle room on this. That makes having an adult life (for occasional volunteering or reunions or weddings) not a possibility unless you use your limited vacation time.

Pros

Just to quantify my review a bit, I am within the top 10% of inside sales reps within our 12,000 person company. It is a great place to work and people doing well ARE able to make good money here. The executive team ALWAYS has a platform for reps to help make SolarCity a better place every quarter. They involve the top 20 reps each quarter in various ways to help their peers through an interactive group called Team Elite. Executives, VP's, Directors, and Managers are always willing to help and go to bat when there are issues with things that need to be fixed. The direction of the company is consistent and although the company is large, decision makers work as hard as possible to steer the big ship quickly when necessary.

Cons

Knee jerk reactions with decision making at a director level create issues from time to time. Culture has had its ups and downs due to HUGE growth last year and subsequent high attrition rates.
