Pros

There are many amazing things about this organization - passionate and tireless people; majority women staff across all offices - a rare thing; some Africans in positions of power; some good ideas and intentions with regard to supporting women in Africa to set up small businesses.

Cons

Sadly despite the really wonderful aspects and goals of the org, I cannot recommend this as a healthy work place. I’ve worked across several African countries in various roles for international NGOs, as a consultant for UN offices and as a journalist. I’m a flexible, experienced and capable person. However, I did not feel supported by my supervisor and I certainly experienced being blamed and sacrificed to protect my supervisor’s image. I also observed behaviour that did not uplift young women and women of colour, and senior management that was unable to share power and decision making.

Pros

Solar Sister leadership has built an organization with a strong foundation and continues to grow with a clear vision of where it is going. The work is creative and challenging and mission driven. You have the opportunity to take the job and make it your own. It is a must for me to work in a job that I am passionate about with other like-minded people and Solar Sister is that in spades. I felt welcome the minute I joined the organization and that welcome attitude and support continues. The US based team do work remotely which is a good fit for me and gives the organization the freedom to find the best employees. We have a lot of flexibility to create our own schedules to get our work completed. Creative thinking is encouraged. Excellent PTO and the pay is competitive. The work includes core areas: gender equality in business, supporting women and girls, access to clean energy, climate change, health and sustainability. You feel as if the work you do, the work the organization does is making an impact. I love working in the global sphere and with the teams in Africa. I am proud to be a member of this team. Pros: You are not a cog-in-the wheel but a valued member of the team. Each member is there to support you, to answer questions, and offer guidance as needed. I love the opportunity to be able to try things. You are appreciated for your area of expertise and listened to. It is a small team so it is easy to communicate though we are remote. The organization has a meaningful mission and strong core values. The culture is connection, building relationships, and being a support.

Cons

You must be a self-starter and not need hand-holding. The work is remote so you need to create a structure for yourself, create your tasks, and stick with it on your own. I like that but it is not for everyone.

Pros

Remote work is very convenient

Cons

I experienced racism and bullying in this organization. I still have PTSD from this nightmerish experience.
