Pros

-Working for the Smithsonian. You get to see exhibitions before anyone else and meet some amazing people. -Flexible working environment -Great benefits (if you qualify for the higher rate of leave)

Cons

- Lack of diversity. While there are interns from different backgrounds, the permanent staff are overwhelminghly White women. - Poor job security. Positions are for one year only and are grant-funded so there is a lot of uncertainty about whether they will continue to be funded year on year. - Being stretched too thin. Because of the way the department is funded, staff are often asked to take on new projects at short notice and/or with tight timelines.

Pros

Even as a highschool intern, my thoughts and ideas were treated seriously and my contributions made an impact. I was also able to take part in a lot of different parts of the research and writing process that were outside of the scope of my internship just by expressing my interest.

Cons

The topics being worked on are very niche, and they vary from summer to summer, so working on a topic that interests you somewhat depends on your luck.

Pros

The internship was paid generously, there is a great corporate culture here, the employees value you and give you an extensive workload, and you will learn skills you never dreamed of.

Cons

The office is directly across from L'Enfant Plaza so you basically have to go there. It's the busiest station in the metro system so getting to and from the office was a bit of a pain.
