Pros
SmartWitness is a great company with a greater culture. When I decided to make the move to join after being at my previous company for almost 12-years, the main question I was asked, “what was it about SmartWitness that was so appealing?” While I do believe the answer to that differs for everyone, I’ll share what it was for me. I interviewed at the encouragement of someone who already worked at SmartWitness. When I first met the two founders, I was struck by their insight and knowledge of the market. Video Telematics is growing at a rate of about 16% and the CEO shared the SmartWitness growth rate which was more than double the market. That was impressive. The people I interviewed with were incredibly passionate, but totally genuine. They demonstrated a high level of integrity and I remember thinking that these are the kind of people who will do the right thing, even if no one is watching. That’s something that was important to me because it’s one of the tenants by which I live my life. Through the interview process, I learned about the company’s key values: doing things without being told, having the grit to persevere when presented with obstacles and an insane focus on putting the client (and their customer) at the center of everything. I was also really impressed with the products and their approach to sell 100% through the channel. What I’ve learned since joining is that all of those great characteristics I noticed during my interviews are in fact embedded in the company's DNA. I not only see that from the people I interviewed with, but I experience it from everyone else in the company. I understand why one of the key values of the company is being client-centric—because we sell exclusively through the channel, so success is 100% dependent on the client’s success. The product quality is second to none (less than a 1% failure rate) and I’m really excited about what’s in development for the future. The culture is welcoming and authentic. The need for a strong work-life balance is driven down from the top. The self-starter company value drives a strong sense of autonomy and people are given the latitude (no, more like expectation) to try, fail, learn, and try again. We work hard, but we have a lot of fun along the way. A friend of mine asked me recently, now that I’m 8 months in, what it’s like to work at SmartWitness. I think my answer to her sums everything up: it feels like I joined a family, not a company. I believe I’m making a meaningful impact every day. I believe whole-heartedly in what we're trying to do. Our brand is all about capturing and protecting the truth. We're a video telematics company and our product is showing not only what happened in the past, but answering the questions around why something happened the way it did. That knowledge is what motivates me to get out of bed and go to work each and every day. I've had a lot of experience working at companies over my career--and the gray hairs to prove it. :-) I can honestly say that SmartWitness is truly something special.
Cons
I think the area requiring the biggest focus on improvement is the benefits package. With that said, I believe the company is committed to improving and already begun adding new benefits this year: short- and long-term disability, life insurance, employee assistance program and unlimited paid vacation. These were added on top of what was already offered: medical, vision, dental, retirement with match, stipend for health club membership and career development opportunities. It's great to see progress and commitment to improvement in the benefits offered within the short time I've been here. I expect the benefits will get even better in the future!
