Pros

- Mostly good colleagues who are talented and hard working - Decent starting compensation - Nice office location - Open and decent founders represent the culture of old

Cons

- The product doesn't work! - Poor benefits in relation to other tech businesses. - Lack of compensation growth once you join. Signal is not unique in this respect, but there was no growth or performance process, with awards made behind closed doors - Underperforming but highly compensated sales team. The market is tough, but multiple sales personnel have been promoted again and again without delivering any sales...perhaps there is another metric for success. - A strong and good culture when I started in 2015 has been eroded by new execs and the loss of the original HR and culture leader. - Some elements of development are difficult to work with, and fail to take responsibility for poorly implemented products. (some are very good though!) - Slow to manoeuvre, if at all. - High turnover. People leave or get fired often. You usually find out if someone got fired via gossip rather than any official announcement. Firings are often swept under the carpet. - Restructuring happens often, usually to promote somebody in sales and find them some people to manage. - An unstable product that fails more often than it works, with slow resolution times and partners often blamed for Signal's own failings. - The few clients who have been acquired are often on lofty promises that client delivery teams cannot do. - Compliance with local laws is...questionable. - How many VPs does it take to change a lightbulb?

Signal Response

We appreciate your candor and passion for Signal. Let me address some of your points for candidates reading this. We fully acknowledge that yes, our culture has evolved as our business has evolved. We’re no longer a start-up trying to innovate; we’re an Identity leader trying to grow. This does mean that some great people who thrive in start-ups will move on. It also means that restructuring happens as we learn how to best serve our new Identity clients; and that the demands of doing business on an international scale require increased engagement from all members of our team. We have a unique entrepreneurial culture at Signal and those roots run fairly deep. So much so that our tenure rates for our engineering team exceed the industry average. Just this past week we celebrated HackWeek with more than 40 presentations, new ideas, and smiles shared over a week of speakers and company outings. Those of us here believe in what we’re doing, and feel proud to be a part of this team. We believe in the incredible work and innovation by the product and engineering teams. We’re excited to continue on this path and optimize our Identity offering. And, as we continue to grow and weather important changes to set us up for success, we remain committed to making Signal a great place to work.

Pros

Remote First, It's in the DNA It's a mission driven org that doesn't feel the need for explosive growth. They have plenty of private funding without people wanting a ROI, they just want to ensure there is a privacy solution not beholden to giant corps Plus, you get to work with some tech celebrities

Cons

It's competitive. You're working with some intelligent, talented and driven individuals. For a while, I had impostor syndrome
