Pros

Great experience working on server and networking projects.

Cons

The working environment surrounds itself with drama and public firings ( escorting out the door style ). Heavy turnover creates a lot of distrust with the business owners. Management is very old school in the sense of how they make employment termination threats in private or publicly. Commitments made to former staff are also not honored.

This is an interesting feedback, considering that we have very few people that have worked for us less than a year. The majority that have worked for less than a year are our interns on fixed terms and the others, if they were let go in under a year, it is because they were detrimental to the morale of the team or mistreated the clients. In our 20 years of business, we have only ever let go of a handful of staff in under a year (that are not interns) and about the same for staff that left on their own. We've never had a public firing or have ever threatened to do so in a public setting. We certainly do escort out the staff that are let go, as we are the custodians of our clients confidential information, but it is never in a disrespectful way. In an office where you can see that someone is being escorted out, it can seem public but there really isn't any other way to escort a person to get their personal belongings. We did have some higher than normal turnover in 2020. COVID forced us to let some staff go and this caused a snowball effect to spooked some other staff. Ultimately, we ended 2020 with more staff at the end of the year then we began it with. I'm sure we are not alone in this regard. One of the things that we are always clear about is that we never hire for someone's contacts. We specifically turn down information that is confidential to their previous employers. We wouldn't want our ex-staff to break their confidentiality agreements with us and as such we don't want them to break it with their ex-employers. That has always been the case and always will be. We hire based on the type of skill that the person can bring to our company for our benefit and for that of our clients. We don't always make the right hire but if it is just that their skills are not up to where we thought they were, we will always work with them to try to get them there. This has certainly led to us keeping staff for longer than we should have but we would rather give them the opportunity to improve their skills. Our company integrity is never something that we are questioned on because we will never do anything that is unethical and will never ask our staff to do anything that is unethical. Not sure what the comment about "own" your staff is about. We certainly have busy times but in general, we are always trying to balance the workloads of our staff. We make sure that they have time for training and that they are not doing too much overtime. Our on call is on a rotation basis and each techs takes on a one week on call slot every 3 - 4 months. Again, not sure what hiring an accredited book keeper is about. Payroll is always done on time and as long as the staff submit their receipts, their expenses are always paid on time. For the majority of the staff, that is all they really concern themselves with. All other book keeping functions are not in the general purview of the staff. Lastly, about commitments made to former staff not being honoured. Over the course of 20 years, we've had our fair share of staff that have come and gone for various reasons. When staff leave, the only commitments that we would make is to give them a reference. The only reason that we would not honour something like that would be if we uncover things that the former staff had been hiding from us and that has happened. We trust our staff to do right for the company and the clients but when we find out that it hasn't been the case, I certainly believe that we shouldn't be giving references. As an employer, we can't lie when giving a reference and we can't give a negative reference, so the correct thing to do is to decline giving a reference. It is never done out of spite. We still get ex-staff that haven't been with us for, almost a decade, ask that we be a reference and we have agreed to do so because they were good staff members when they were with us.

Pros

Shing's biggest strength is it's "client success" attitude, which flows over into it's employee's success as well. Never treating either as a "one size fits all", customizing for the best client success or employee success is what they are exceptional at. Every day I get to do what I need to to feel successful.

Cons

They move quick, in terms of technology adoption, creative solutions and over all business driving. It can be a challenge to adapt in the quickly changing environment. I like it, but it's definitely not for all.
