Pros

Good job security. Opportunity for advancement, although its competitive. Higher advancement often requires relocating. Decent benefits, salary better than many competitors for a like position. Most of the employees are great people. If you're good at managing your store upper management will let you do it without too much oversight.

Cons

Bad work life balance. Not enough staff. Unless your sales are constantly 10%+ over last year get used to hearing from upper management that you are failing. I made ~ 5K in bonus last year but will receive a "needs improvement" rating on my financial results review. This is a very confusing message. The leadership is helpful in resolving issues but is deaf to the idea that more staff would translate into more sales and better employee retention. They expect more sales per person every year. If you had record setting sales last year and repeat it dollar for dollar this year they will be totally unsatisfied with your performance and give you a poor review. Expect a roughly 10% budget increase every year no matter what. Selling oftentimes 100s of gallons a day with a staff of 1-4 people is very tiring and stressful. The POS system and computer software is garbage. Constantly causing long waits while it loads customer information and often forcing you to restart from the beginning of the process if you make a single error. I am good at running the system, better than many older managers but still often find myself frustrated. Any self respecting software engineer would jump off a bridge before putting their name on this software. Being open on holidays such as July 4th is un-american and unacceptable.

Pros

A positive work environment. The best co-workers I have had so far in my career worked with me at Sherwin. I also worked under an amazing management team. There is a lot of room for career growth. I worked for Sherwin for about 3.5 years. I started as a contracted lab technician, then I was hired full time as an R&D Associate Chemist. I quickly worked my way up to R&D Chemist within a year of being hired full time. The department I worked in was very fast paced, however, I know there are many other groups that move at a much slower pace with longer timelines. This would make it much easier to manage the workload.

Cons

Working with marketing was challenging at times. We would regularly receive big requests a day before they needed something. This would pose a challenge when you had other priorities to attend to. The pay was average. I do think it could have been slightly higher for all of the job responsibilities given to the chemists in my group specifically. The workload was overwhelming at times.
