Pros

Decent pay and remote work.

Cons

Although the founder has officially retired, he still appears to be heavily involved, which is confusing to staff. The new CEO seems to have had a harmful effect on the organization he established, too, since the company’s direction has shifted in ways that feel totally out of step with its original mission and values. Its messaging has also become more fear-driven, which can feel at odds with evidence-based public health communication and more reflective of an outdated “war on drugs” mindset than one actually focused on supporting people and communities affected by SUD. The workplace itself is toxic, with an expectation that employees are always available and working beyond normal hours. Managers say things like, “I’ll work on this later tonight” or “will do it over the weekend” and it has become normalized, leaving little room for work-life balance. HR also seems largely absent, communicating very little and not functioning as a reliable support for staff during layoffs and ongoing changes.

Pros

There are still many talented, compassionate, and mission-driven people working here. The work itself can be meaningful, and there is a strong base of employees who genuinely care about the population being served.

Cons

I joined this organization because I believed deeply in its original mission and the work being done. Unfortunately, recent shifts have made the environment increasingly difficult to navigate. The organization’s direction has changed in ways that feel misaligned with its original purpose and values for many employees. The messaging has also become increasingly fear-oriented at times, which can feel inconsistent with evidence-based public health communication. Morale has also suffered due to ongoing uncertainty around staffing and restructuring. Employees are quietly facing the possibility of losing their jobs, yet there has been no direct acknowledgment or transparent communication from leadership or HR. Instead, employees are often met with wellness initiatives and learning sessions that can feel disconnected from the realities people are experiencing. Many employees have families, medical needs, and financial obligations that depend on stable employment. Clear communication about organizational changes would go a long way toward treating staff with dignity and allowing people to plan for their futures. Major organizational shifts often happen with little warning, leaving employees feeling excluded from decisions that directly affect them.
